For King & Country

Excerts fro m the newly released book For King & Country by Dominicans

Irving W. Andre and Gabriel J. Christian.

Wesley contribution to World War I

“Wesley historian Arnold Telemaque, a 29 year veteran of the Dominica 's Fire Services, Freedom party stalwart, church minister and erstwhil e village council chairman, has provided information about veterans Egbert Joseph and Edward “Jacko” James from Wesley and Marigot respectively. Following the war Joseph received lands from the authorities on the Constant Spring settlement in promimity to the La Soye River. He earned a living as a farmer and fisherman. He also havested lumber on the Londonderry Estate and in the heights of Wesley in areas such as Wilbrum, Pulpit, Oriente, La Croix, Hummond and Simper. Edward James, whose wife Vinolia Telemaque was the sister of Joseph's wife, Rose “Vida” Telemaque, worked as a master carpenter and joiner following the war. He built many homes in Wesley and worked on the old Marigot hospital and on the Wesley Ebenezer Methodist Church in 1932. When the banana exporting company, Band and foley moved its operations to the Woodfordhill Eastate in the late 1940s it hired James to aid in the construction of the building on the estate. In his spare time, James also worked as a barber.”

I would recommend this book to every West Indian household especially those living in North America . This book is a historical recording of the contribtuions of Caribbean veterans fighting in World War 1 &2.
